Squirrel Stopper Liberty Universal Squirrel Stopper Baffle Review

climb up into the baffle and popped the top piece off that closed the open hole on the top and slipped through the top of the baffle. The baffle comes with several of these depending on the thickness of your pole which one you use. My husband had wondered about this piece from day one if this was too flimsy and could be pushed off by the squirrels and sure enough they finally figured it out.We bought ours directly from the makers of this baffle and I emailed them about two days ago and haven't heard back. Some how I feel we aren't the only ones to discover this. We will have to do one of two things now. Either put a thicker ABS over the pole so there is no need to use the piece they push off to cover the gap or some how secure the top piece so it can not be just pushed off. We were very disappointed to see the squirrel on top of the birdfeeder and I think we spent like $60.00 some for ours a year ago.
Update 6-14-10 Well finally got ahold of Dr. Kim Sena who owns and founder of this and he sent me more gaskets and I tried the smaller gasket that is more snug against the pole. It has been about 1 month and the squirrel not only chewed the gasket off but also the hard plastic top cover pieces. So now not even a replacement gasket will fit on the top of the baffle. I emailed Kim back and have yet to hear back from it and it has been several days. He says this is the first time this has happened but some how it is hard to believe my squirrels are that much smarter than the garden variety squirrels. One thing that might work or at least for awhile is to stuff hardware cloth up into the baffle to prevent squirrel from climbing up inside to chew on the gaskets. You may want to try their more expense Squirrel Stopper with slick metal pole that probably prevents them from climbing the pole in the first place.

Update 6-17-10 got an email back from Dr. Sena and he will send me another baffle and he wants to keep in touch and try to figure a way to prevent squirrels from circumventing this baffle.

My squirrels wouldn't even touch this item. After sitting on the feeder for two weeks, I finally took it off, broke it up into pieces and put it on the ground.I thought the birds might like it or the squirrels might pick the pieces up off of the ground, but they didn't. Bird lovers should note that the $1.29 price quoted is "per cake" and the item is sold in a 12-pack only ($15.48 total, plus $9.75 shipping = $25.23.) This works out to an unimpressive 18% savings, further reduced by a high shipping charge. Do not be misled into thinking, as I was, that the 12-pack is $1.29 + $9.75 shipping = $11.04 (works out to $0.92 per cake, which would be a great price, similar to Xmas Tree Shops.) I placed an order thru Amazon, put $11.05 on my Mastercard, and received one suet cake in a padded envelope. I do not call $11.05 for a single suet cake a terrfic buy -- in fact, I'd call it a rip-off. I called Grady's several times and was continually referred to someone who wasn't in the store that day. After several attempts, they agreed to credit the full price, and said not to bother returning the item. Okay ! They also agreed that the ad was misleading and they'd fix it. Okay ! Except the credit was never processed, and the ad remains the same. I had to follow-up several times 4 weeks later, asking if the credit had been processed. This, my feathered friends, is a lot of work for a suet cake. Finally, I took it up with Amazon, and they issued the credit. I would not recommend dealing with this vendor. I would highly recommend Nottawa Bird Supply (they have a website), that sells a high-quality product in a variety pack with free shipping. Forget Grady's -- they certainly do not warrant top placement on anyone's page.

Natureline Bluebird House Review

I love this bluebird house. My husband positioned it on a high plastic pole in our backyard in a place where I can watch the birds. He also hung two feeders and a water container on another pole near the house but about 10 feet away so this houses occupants wouldn't be disturbed. I had doubts it would be used the first year. I would watch 2 sets of bluebirds checking the house out, they would sit on top of it and also cling to the entrance and poke their heads in and out. Then fly off. Then they would come back and do it again.This went on for a while. Then a blue bird male and female moved in.. I was thrilled. We had three babies the first year they moved in. I would advise to definitely make sure your pole is at the least 6 foot tall and a baffle placed under it. Make sure all branches or brush are trimmed away from this house as the birds won't use it if they feel threatened. Our biggest problem at our house is the neighbors cat. So we make sure our dogs are in the yard to scare the cat off as the neighbor refuses to keep the cat in.

Illuminarie Solar Globe Review

I bought this globe based on the image that accompanied the Amazon ad. In it was shown a deep glowing ball at dusk casting a blue hue to nearby objects and so I naturally assumed that's what I was getting. Instead I got a globe that looks like a plastic beachball during the day and glows for about 10 minutes at night. And when I say glows I'm really stretching - you'd have to be pretty good at seeing in the blackness of night to even know it was glowing.

Not a fan of having to squint at things that are supposed to "glow in the dark". As a daylight garden object d'art it's barely passable - very disappointed with this item.

*** Additional - the above review must have been written by someone with a vested interest in this product since that's the only item they reviewed - glowingly I might add (arf). Suggesting a glow in the dark item should have a bulb placed in or near it is the single most ridiculous thing I've heard this week. This feeder has a number of design issues that make it difficult to use.And, over time, the birds have stopped using this feeder.

In the beginning, the birds really liked this feeder,and they were all over it. Perching birds, clinging birds all seem satisfied. But something has happened over time, and it appears that the seed-delivery is no longer working well.I don't know whether it's because the seed is exposed to the rain and the quality deteriorates, or if the weight of the seed has caused the links to close up making the seed difficult to extract, but the birds have stopped using this feeder.

In addition, filling the feeder is a real challenge.

1. It does not stand on its own. If you put it on the floor to fill, it collapses, since the chain links are loose and there's no structure to hold the feeder in full open position. This is especially problematic if there's some seed remaining in the feeder. To fill it, you have to hold the handle in one hand while holding the cover open with the same hand (a bit tricky) and then fill with the other. You can't put the feeder down on the floor or it collapses sprinkling seed all over the place. To combat this, I rigged up an S-hook and hung the feeder from it.That way, I could hold the cover open with one hand, and fill with the other.

2. When you're filling it, the seeds pour out of the chain links. Much seed is wasted on the floor. You have to fill it with the feeder sitting in the seed bag so the seeds fall back into the bag.

In all, I would not recommend this chain-link style feeder.

6018 Stainless Steel Coop Cup with Bolt 30 Ounce Package Review

I bought this for a puppy crate. This dish is fine quality stainless and snaps into a plated steel hoop, which in turn attaches to the bars of the crate. It is chew proof and removes easily for cleaning. A determined dog could remove the dish. The dish is round, and so takes up quite a bit of real estate in the crate.

If you look closely at the picture you can see it's one flaw: the mounting bracket fits at an upward angle. To level the dish you have to leave the screw loose. I wanted something the puppy would not knock off the bars and spill, so this is a bit of an annoyance.

Pine Tree Farms 12 Ounce Natural Beef Suet Cake Review

This plain, pure suet is a good product if you have nuisance birds like house sparrows or starlings hogging your suet, which often happens when the suet contains peanuts, corn or millet.

Having said that, $8+ dollars a cake plus $7+ for shipping is pretty outrageous. I can buy this item at the local birding supply store for a little over $5 a cake, including state and city sales tax. I was hoping to find it cheaper than that on Amazon, but it doesn't seem likely.

This is a large, well built cover that I use to keep the snow off the seed tray. The clamp is easy to tighten and it stays put. It all works great and is just the thing to keep snow off your seeds. Millet Spray Holder Review

When I first saw this contraption, I was skeptical; but since I got it for $1.99, I figured if it didn't work I wouldn't be out much. This was a nice surprise. I was expecting it to be blue, but the one I got is a pale yellow. At first, my budgies, Jake and Stella didn't pay much attention to it. Honestly, I think Jake may have been a little afraid of it. When there was no activity with the holder after a few hours, I tried a new tactic. This thing works much better if you cram two millet sprays into it instead of one. It pushes the sprays up against the sides of the basket and makes access to the seeds much easier. Once they get the hang of eating out of it, the holder works great. It also solves the problem of Stella ripping the sprays apart for sheer entertainment. She would tear at the stem until it was completely bare, eating little or none of the seed. Poor Jakey didn't used to even get a chance to eat any of the millet, unless he picked it out of the bottom of the cage. This thing slows Stella down considerably and she doesn't guard it from Jake the way she would a bare spray. A great solution if you have a millet monster like I do!

Seed Saucer Green Review

The saucer with the removable grid in place does an excellent job keeping seeds and husks from spilling onto the ground. The product would rate five stars if it weren't for one dangerous design flaw: the holes in the removable grid are just large enough for a sparrow-sized bird to work its head through to reach seed that has collected in the bowl below, but not large enough for the bird to pull its head back through. The grid is made of a very stiff, hard plastic which, perhaps were less rigid, would allow birds to work their heads free on their own should they become stuck. After freeing several sparrows and goldfinches whose heads had become stuck in a grid hole, I finally removed the grid and am using the saucer without it. There is some seed spillage without the grid, but nowhere near the amount that was spilling before I purchased the saucer. I can recommend this product only if it is used without the grid, and without the grid in place you will experience more seed spillage than the product was designed to prevent.

Schrodt Designs TH-16TF Tranquil Forest Teahouse Birdfeeder Review

This bird feeder is certainly beautiful and, at first, seems very well designed. However, squirrels have bitten away the cedar around the openings to get at the seed. The holes at the bottom are now too big to contain any seed and the feeder is now essentially a funnel. While I think I can repair this damage, the design should be reworked to include metal plates around the openings and perches. Or, the overall esthetics of the design could be preserved by lining the sides with the same kind of etched glass which comprises the body of the feeder. I would rate this feeder higher if it had come with some documentation warning me about the potential for squirrel damage. I don't know what I would have done though -- if I wanted to look at something as ugly as one of those "satellite dishes" I would have bought a plastic bird feeder. In sort, this is a beautiful bird feeder but you'll need to guard it against bushy-tailed vandals.

Schrodt Designs Model BB Bat Bungalow Review

I bought this as a Christmas present for my dad, but it's winter so he hasn't put it up yet.We don't yet know if it will attract bats and if the bats will control the mosquitos--that's what we're hoping for.

What I can say is that I received the product quickly and it was very well-packed for shipping.The seller did a great job. I will also say that the brass detail is very beautiful.

The birds appear to have issues feeding from the suet cakes on the ends. A lip or rod on the end where those interested could perch would have been a helpful item.Very easy to fill but high winds manage to 'feed' the ground below the feeder.

677 Birdfeeder Metal Bronze with Wire Mesh Middle Cyclinder 15in Review

It's a good feeder in that the feeding tube is mesh, which allows the bird seed to stay fresh and dry - as opposed to a solid tube with feeding stations that allows moisture to enter, but not dry once inside, causing mold and contamination of bird seed. It is also very easy to fill. And you can't beat the price.
The semi bad thing is that the cage surround has openings large enough to allow squirrels to feed from it. It basically became 'the squirrel feeder'. If hung in a place inaccessible to squirrels, it's a perfect bird feeder.
