Droll Yankees SEP 68-Inch Shepherds Envy Pole with Hanging Arm Review

Although my backyard is mostly woods, believe it or not I did not have any suitable branches to hand my bird feeders!I was debating on a yard pole versus a deck system.My husband reminded me that birds can be quite messy and we should perhaps place a yard pole near the woods, where we can easily see it from our window and patio door.Good idea - as much as I like the birds, the mess belongs in the yard (droppings, shells, feathers, etc).I went to literally 5 garden stores and 3 hardware stores and couldn't find anything suitable.Most were too flimsy, too short, did not anchor well into the ground, etc.I researched this pole and it looked like a good one, although no reviews were available.I took a chance.

This pole is pefect!THick, well made.I have a Droll Yankees Flipper Droll Yankees YF Flipper Bird Feeder and Whipper Droll Yankees YCPW180 Whipper Bird Feeder, Dark Blue.Both are very large, heavy feeders that hold 5 pounds of seed apiece.They are 21 inches long and 4 1/2 inches in diameter, so no flimsy pole was going to do the job!This pole has a corkscrew spike that anchors it into the ground.There are four tripod-like legs that lie flat on the ground for further stability.I purchased an add on double arm mount Droll Yankees, Inc Double Arm Mount and Hanger - Adds 16 Inch Arm to DCH, so I could put two large feeders on the pole.The locking mechanism on the arm really keeps the bird feeder well secured hanging on the pole.The arm is angles outward, giving the larger feeders distance from the pole while hanging.I also ordered a Droll Yankees squirrel dome which works well with this pole Droll Yankees SQPM Pole Mount Squirrel Guard. That is also very thick and well made.Secures well on the pole.No squirrels have yet to get passed it.I also ordered a triple arm hanger Droll Yankees, Inc Triple Hook Assembly, which allows me to hang three other smaller items onto the pole.I have a small peanut feeder, a hummingbird feeder and a suit holder.All is well made and encompases a complete bird feeding station!I liked this pole so much I ordered another one.If you are looking for a pole for your bird feeders, look no further - just order it!

Perky Pet HF91 Triple Treat Feeder, 6 lb capacity Review

I purchased this bird feeder in hopes of downsizing for the winter months utilizing the possiblity of putting different selections of seed into 1 feeder, but am not sure it's going to work that way.I like the dividers and have used 2 sides for sunflower seed and the other side for thistle, however the gap at the bottom is large enough for the seed to mix.This does not appear to bother the birds so it does not bother me.The problem lies in the roofing when there is a stiff breeze as it acts as a wind catcher and ends up tilting off the feeder exposing the seed to the elements.Since it is plastic it is very lightweight and does not hold up to strong winds, and it's only November.I currently have 2 bungie cords fastening the roof on opposite sides to keep the seed dry but am not sure I'm going to keep up this process for the next 5 months of winter. If there was some simple way to secure the roof once the feeder was filled it would be a more desirable product, or if you have a location where it would remain out of the wind it would be a good feeder.

I gave this to my wife for Christmas.We have had it installed for two days and haven't seen any birds.But, there are not many birds around here in winter.We have no reason to expect there won't be numerous birds once warm weather gets here.

The plastic viewing surface is a "one-way" mirror.During daylight, if you look into it from the outside, you see what appears to be a perfectly mirrored surface.You cannot see anything inside the house, even with the room lights turned on.The plastic is not crystal clear, so when looking out from inside the room, the colors are slightly muted.We don't expect that to decrease our enjoyment of the product.As seen from the outside, the mirror acts like a magnifying cosmetic mirror.Any bird on the food dish will see its own reflection magnified in the vertical dimension.We think that might scare the birds at first, but we think they will get used to it.

During night, the situation is reversed.If the room lights are on, you can see into the room from the outside.We drape a towel over it at night.The towel serves a second purpose.The plastic is not a good insulator and becomes a source of a cold air draft.The towel helps mitigate that.

The unit opens up for access from inside the house. That's great, as we can bring the food tray inside at night so we don't feed any nocturnal creatures.

Installation was a little complicated as our window sill was too wide to open the unit enough for access from inside.This was solved with a two by six board placed between the sill and the bottom of the bird feeder.The board had to be notched in the corners to make it fit well.There is a plastic panel for each side of the bird feeder.These have to be cut to the correct size to fill in the space between the bird feeder and the sides of the window.Measure carefully; if you cut it too small you will be out of luck.The unit needs about 15 inches of clearance from the window pane to open fully.We had to move furniture to accommodate that, which was far more work than installing the bird feeder into the window. A hacksaw and utility knife were needed for installation.The unit is of light but adequate construction; I was worried while handling it that I might damage it.Once installed in the window, it seems sturdy enough.The viewing surface was protected with a plastic film on both sides.

The only thing missing was a bracket to screw into the side of the window to prevent it from being opened.

Update: We have had cardinals feeding.They were completely unaware of our presence.

Second update.This morning there was a knocking sound coming from the bird feeder.
It was a female cardinal fighting with her reflection.

Third update: the cardinal spent the entire day fighting with her reflection.And started up again this morning; I had intended to sleep late.Later a squirrel got into it.I gave him a near heart attack my thumping the feeder.He was back in 15 minutes.

Forth update: At night we put some paper in it to obscure the mirrored surface so that we don't wake up to the thump thump thump sound of a bird fighting with its reflection.

Droll Yankees Flipper Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder Review

In my thirty years of birding, this is the first feeder that has beaten our previously undefeated squirrels. It really works! However, if you are buying this feeder for entertainment, forget it. What happens is the squirrels will each get on it ONCE! They will proceed to be thrown off and that is it....they will not try it again, because they know the result. If you really are hoping to see more, you might try having the battery alternate in off/on mode so the squirrels will be confused, but I doubt they will come back.

Droll Yankees Yankee Whipper 180 Degree 29 x 9 x 9 inches Review

This is a great feeder. I had it up for 3 weeks, no squirrels. Plenty of Cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, etc. However, today I saw a squirrel clinging to the holes and sides of the feeder.

The feeder is suspended buy very thin 30 lb. monofilament fishing line from a very high branch; feeder is about 7 feet from ground. Would be difficult for a squirrel to slide down the fishing line - but possible, I suppose.

Edit - now I know he leaped up from the nearby giant Rhododendron. I moved the Whipper away from the Rhody - but too close to the trunk of the tree - about 5 feet. Witnessed many squirrels leaping from trunk of tree onto Whipper. They grab onto the birdseed holes.

Imoved the Whipper - now it is at least 6 feet off the ground, but over the lawn - will need to move it again.

I liked having the feeder over the Rhody - empty sunflower shells fall onto the ground under the Rhody, out of sight. Rhody gives the birds plenty of cover - they perch in the Rhody before darting over to the feeder, then dart back.A good thing as I saw a hawk peering down yesterday from a tree in the next yard.

It really is easy to clean.I am getting about the same interest from the hummingbirds as I did before with my Perky Pet feeder.We're on the east coast, so we only get the ruby throated hummingbirds.They drink both when perched and when hovering.I might get a second one!

Also, the feeder directions said to pour the sugar and warm tap water directly into the feeder's glass top, and simply stir until desolved.This worked very well.Previously, I had always boiled the mixture before using, but this techique works great.So it has time to cool, I now mix it in a glass; let it cool, and then take it out to the feeder.Take apart the feeder, rinse with a hose, easy reassemble, and fill with the mixture from the glass.EZ!

Strathwood Granite-Finish Bird Feeder Review

It is very pretty and my daughter loves holding the little birdie. It is also nice because it looks heavy, but is actually light. It is made of metal with some kind of faux stone finish that looks good in the garden. BUT if you have hard water like I do, don't use it for a bird bath. It's positively amazing how fast the calcium builds up in a black bird bath. It's much nicer for birdseed. The little birds love hopping up to it and feeding from the edges.

First Nature 16 oz Hummingbird Feeder Review

As advertised, this model is extremely easy to clean.The wide bottle mouth makes it easy to get a brush inside and the seperating base makes cleaning the inside a snap.Our humming birds love it and come by the droves to drink (see images I posted).In fact, so many hummingbirds came that they'd drain the whole feeder in half a day!So I upgraded to the 32-oz model which is a bit more clunky looking, but otherwise works just as well and last twice as long.

Aspects Hummingbird Hummzinger Feeder Review

I have owned several hummingbird feeders - some great, some not-so-great (and some downright terrible). I had always read rave reviews about the hummzinger and made a promise to myself to get one someday. I should have fulfilled that promise ages ago! This is, bar-none, the absolute best hummingbird feeder you can find. The innovation that went into this design is elegant, simple, and (nearly perfectly) effective. From the fact that you can mount this feeder either on a pole or from the included hanger, all the way down to the built-in ant moat, molded "flower" rain guards (not those cheap inserts), SIMPLE disassembly and cleanup (very few feeders allow such full access)... the list goes on...!
Besides the fast assembly, among the first things I noticed were the easy measurement marks on the side (marked every 4 oz). The next, and most important, observation was the fact that the hummingbirds went bananas over this feeder. Literally, within minutes I had a swarm around the new feeder (placed in the same spot as the previous ho-hum feeder). The hummers were ecstatic! In fact, I begin to wonder if I'll have problems with the other two (perky pet bottle-style) feeders not being drained fast enough. I was fascinated with the fact that I could watch them drinking from below - through the clear-bottom reservoir. The next thing I noticed was the genius behind the way this feeder thwarts bees. My usual-suspect wasp was up to no good; trying to get to the sugar. Because the flowers are on the very top of this feeder, the bees just simply CAN'T get to the sugar at all!
I think the only (slightly) negative thing to say about this feeder is that it's completely made of plastic, but that should never be a problem as long as you're not letting the squirrels get to it.
I've run on too long with this review, but I think most will agree that you can't say enough about how well-designed this thing is. Get the hummzinger! The only word of caution I offer is that you watch out for some sellers (*cough*) who over-charge on shipping.

Bird Brain Model 12240 Friendship Hummingbird Feeder Review

This is a fairly pretty, small hummingbird feeder.It is quite delicate, and is high maintenance as you have to keep it at least half full for the feeding tubes to reach the liquid, so since it's so small, you will have to fill it often.I will probably give it as a gift; too much fuss for me.

I really love birding and looked for a decorative birdhouse that had all of the recommendations from the National Audubon Society.This house has a nice clean out in the back, proper sloping of the roof to allow for water run-off, and no perch that would allow larger birds to rob the nest.It is also just gorgeous.The face of the house is made of carved resin but you'd never know it....it looks just like wood.The details are beautiful.This birdhouse really invokes a "wood spirit" type look and I love it!

Red Cherries Hummingbird Feeder Review

It looks nice but...
- the feeding pipes are made from metal and appear to be copper but start to rust and seem to oxidize from the inside (i.e. when cleaning I get a lot of dark brown dirt out of them) - I wouldn't want to drink from it myself.
- the rubber part smells awful (like a car tire) and I am not sure if any chemicals get released into the water
- the glass is just painted red and the paint comes off if scrubbed
- the dripping seems to be much worse than my previous glass feeder

I had a red glass feeder before which worked better. The feeding pipe looks like the product photo here (transparent single plastic pipe with a red rubber cap). So I am really disappointed that the photo doesn't show the product and the function is not as promised (as I am probably poisoning the birds).

Bloom Callipe Review

I just bought this hummingbird feeder and haven't been using it for very long, but it has a couple of problems that are obvious. First, it doesn't hang level, so one of the feeding tubes is lower than the other two.But, such is the nature of hand-blown glass, so I can live with that.The other thing that bugs me is that you can't fill it any higher than the feeding tubes.It is supposed to hold 20-ozs of nectar, I made 16-ozs and much of that leaked straight out.And because it doesn't hang level, it's even worse.It is very pretty though and I look forward to hopefully attracting many hummingbirds with it!

This is a very good item for helping to keep your hummingbird feeders clean---an absolute must for the health of hummingbirds.You can insert this mop cleaner into the feeders that have bottlenecks and it will help get out the mold that inevitably forms. Be sure to rinse the mop thoroughly after cleaning.I find that these mops usually last for a season or two, but graduallly they will come apart and need to be replaced.Overall they work very well.Another good item to get is Droll Yankees PLB Perfect Little Brush.These little brushes are the best for cleaning the holes of feeding ports.

I like that you can plant this as deep as you want, however although it suits my purpose, there could be a little more of a hook because when it is windy things tend to fly off.I haven't tried the pole mount.Nice enough item for the price but to hang a normal size bird feeder I'd recommend something a little sturdier.

Pineapple Bird Feeder Review

I love the pineapple shape and think it adds a welcoming touch to our front yard.In fact I love the look so much that I've decided to use it as art rather than a bird feeder.

I tried using it as a birdfeeder but there were two drawbacks.
1. Sunflower seeds were the only feed large enough not to spill out immediately all over the ground.

Of course, Droll Yankees doesn't really have any inferior products. This feeder holds plenty of peanuts, and the birds definitely love it. The clingers can grab right on to the mesh, and the perchers can sit on the two perches. Squirrels will be attracted to it, but will be annoyed because it takes forever for them just to steal one peanut. I coated my peanuts with Squirrel Away hot pepper powder and have not had an issue since.

Margarita Hummingbird Feeder Review

Although very cute the hummingbirds could not figure out how to use this feeder. I have 15 or so feeders in my yard of all different kinds and shapes and once in a while, they do not like a certain kind.This is one of them. I tried painting the feed holes red but it still did not work. They were attracted but I think the nectar sits too low. Wish it worked as I really liked the idea of hanging a margarita glass for them to drink out of.

The feeder arrived totally broken, mostly because it was sent with the worst mail order packing job I have ever seen.Huge box with about 2 yards of brown paper barely wrapped around a birdfeeder that obviously bounced around in a smashed box.In addition, the feeder was very poorly constructed, thin plastic, with each tube made of two pieces of plastic loosely glued together and one piece had totally snapped near base.I would never consider ordering this feeder again. Amazon needs to figure out a way to do a better packing job at Christmas, especially if using UPS since they treat packages so badly.

I admit that this product sounds good in theory, and when I first received it I was very pleased with it.It's pretty, a beautiful glass piece, and fits very well inside the stake.However, it became apparent very quickly that it is useless as anything other than a pretty "objet d'art" for your garden.Ants found mine immediately, and completely clogged the feeder port.Then after a light shower, the nectar had become diluted and was useless too.After 24 hours, the solution was filled with dead ants.I tried covering the stake in Vaseline, but it did little good.Unless the glass blowers can come up with an effective ant/rain guard, I wouldn't recommend this product.In fact, I'm considering returning it, as it is expensive and doesn't do what I purchased it for.

I bought this feeder because it looked sturdy; it's very, very heavy and appeared to be durable.Those attractive pewter-look supports are solid PLASTIC which cracks quite easily.First the shingles started falling off the roof, which I reapplied with hot glue.Then the first time a squirrel knocked it out of a small [6 ft high] tree (this item is not squirrel resistant as one tag indicates), the bottom broke in two and the "pseudo metal" supports broke in half.This feeder is attractive, but after you buy some feeders three and four times, you learn to buy the best.Attractive as it is, looks aren't everything.I would not recommend this feeder and have replaced mine with a Stokes Wire Mesh Seed Feeder.

Striped sunflower seed offers less nutrition, though they appear bigger because the heart floats around in the shell.Black oil is preferred by more types of birds; mixed bird seed will attract rats and mice as the larger birds come along and knock all the small seed out of the way to get to the black oil.

This is a very good feeder for the price. I gave it a try a try because of the great price and because I was tired of all of the thistle seed that was wasted on the ground using the mesh bag thistle seed feeders.This feeder cuts down on wasted thistle seed.Most of the seed drops into the tray and what doesn't get eaten I just scoop up and put back into the container.It also holds a lot of seed and lets many birds feed comfortably at once. Twirl-a-Squirrel Baffle, Green Review

I picked up one of these to try to keep my bird seed being eaten by the birds in my backyard instead of the greedy squirrels.(There is a squirrel feeder in the yard as well, but the squirrels still climb up and go for the more expensive bird seed.)

I give it 3 stars because it is a bit more finicky than I would have hoped for.According to the instructions that come with it:

1) Works on feeders up to 8 pounds - not 10 as described above in the description.My feeder is on the edge.

2) You can't hang it from a rope of anything else not rigid. My feeder hangs from a long chain and already has a rain guard over it.Due to weight if I put the Twirl-a-Squirrel above that chain and guard then I exceed the weight limit and the instructions say I can't hang it off the end of the chain so it is kind of limiting.

3) It triggers when it detects 1 pound of weight. Unfortunately this is sensistive enough to go off just from birds using the feeder.It is not uncommon for there to be 10+ birds on the feeder and sometimes another will land "hard" on the bottom of the feeder and start the twirling.

4) Instructions say to take it down when windy.I haven't had it long enough to know how sensitive it is going to be to wind yet but this does concern me as it is often windy in my backyard.

5) If your feeder has a screwed in hook on top of it then the twirl-a-squirrel can unscrew it from the feeder when it rotates.Not a problem for me but could be for others.

On the plus side it does a great job of chasing away the squirrels so far and the birds have been persistent with dealing with the false alarms that send them flying away.

I hope this has been helpful to others who are considering giving this a try.I give it a thumbs up overall and recommend it.

Le Petit Chalet Newel Post for Bird Houses and Feeders Review

If you are going to keep this birdhouse on your deck or patio I might recommend this product, but otherwise it's not really made for in the dirt applications.Actually, come to think of it, the stand is not very sturdy so it will easily tip in the wind even if you did mount it on a deck or patio.So I suppose I would not recommend it at all unless you are keeping it inside for decretive purposes.

I bought this stand to go with my expensive new birdhouse and the holes were not drilled in the right spots (birdhouse holes were 4.5" apart, stand was 5" apart) so I had to improvise.Then I had to wrap it in plastic, dig a hole and bury it in the dirt.Why you ask?Because the whole thing is made of wood which will rot, and there are no mounting spikes or ties that come with it for in the dirt applications - which I imagine has got to be like 90% of their market.I suppose I expected that by looking at the picture, but I chose this anyway because it was good looking with my birdhouse from le petit chalet.That's the reason for not giving it one star.

Joseph's Studio Saint Francis Bird Feeder Garden Figure Statue 13" Review

I've seen a number of Francis of Assisi statues/figurines. Some, of course, are life-size (or larger) statues that can only be purchased by organizations, museums, and the wealthy. Others are smaller (suitable for personal gardens, etc.) but still too expensive for many people, and some are still too large for some uses.

I've also seen reasonably-priced statues/figurines that were poorly done, odd looking, or cheap looking. One even had splotches (no other word for them) all over it (not just on his clothes, perhaps meant as patches in his robe, but even on the animals!).

This "bird feeder" is actually a figurine or small statue. The fingers, toes, and facial features are well done (even finger nails) with each finger clear and refined in workmanship. The animals are well done also (fawn, birds) and in reasonable "locations"; the chain and Cross he wears are very well done. I actually have mine displayed in my living room - it is that nice.

This statue is suitable for display as artwork, for use as a key caddy (or ring caddy in the kitchen), or for its intended use as a bird feeder. The size is small enough to fit almost anywhere, yet suitable for an outdoor setting as well. It can be hung up or stood on its base; since it can be hung, the only location not suitable is where it can be viewed from the rear or in the round; it can be viewed from both sides, however. I recommend it for Catholics, Protestants, and Independents - anyone who respects his work and/or loves nature/wildlife.

I most highly recommend it as the best statue/figurine of Francis of Assisi that I've ever seen for sale in the retail market.

MiniBlossom Hummingbird Feeder Green on Stake Review
