Squirrel Stopper Liberty Universal Squirrel Stopper Baffle Review

climb up into the baffle and popped the top piece off that closed the open hole on the top and slipped through the top of the baffle. The baffle comes with several of these depending on the thickness of your pole which one you use. My husband had wondered about this piece from day one if this was too flimsy and could be pushed off by the squirrels and sure enough they finally figured it out.We bought ours directly from the makers of this baffle and I emailed them about two days ago and haven't heard back. Some how I feel we aren't the only ones to discover this. We will have to do one of two things now. Either put a thicker ABS over the pole so there is no need to use the piece they push off to cover the gap or some how secure the top piece so it can not be just pushed off. We were very disappointed to see the squirrel on top of the birdfeeder and I think we spent like $60.00 some for ours a year ago.
Update 6-14-10 Well finally got ahold of Dr. Kim Sena who owns and founder of this and he sent me more gaskets and I tried the smaller gasket that is more snug against the pole. It has been about 1 month and the squirrel not only chewed the gasket off but also the hard plastic top cover pieces. So now not even a replacement gasket will fit on the top of the baffle. I emailed Kim back and have yet to hear back from it and it has been several days. He says this is the first time this has happened but some how it is hard to believe my squirrels are that much smarter than the garden variety squirrels. One thing that might work or at least for awhile is to stuff hardware cloth up into the baffle to prevent squirrel from climbing up inside to chew on the gaskets. You may want to try their more expense Squirrel Stopper with slick metal pole that probably prevents them from climbing the pole in the first place.

Update 6-17-10 got an email back from Dr. Sena and he will send me another baffle and he wants to keep in touch and try to figure a way to prevent squirrels from circumventing this baffle.

After sitting on the feeder for two weeks, I finally took it off, broke it up into pieces and put it on the ground.I thought the birds might like it or the squirrels might pick the pieces up off of the ground, but they didn't. Bird lovers should note that the $1.29 price quoted is "per cake" and the item is sold in a 12-pack only ($15.48 total, plus $9.75 shipping = $25.23.) This works out to an unimpressive 18% savings, further reduced by a high shipping charge. Do not be misled into thinking, as I was, that the 12-pack is $1.29 + $9.75 shipping = $11.04 (works out to $0.92 per cake, which would be a great price, similar to Xmas Tree Shops.) I placed an order thru Amazon, put $11.05 on my Mastercard, and received one suet cake in a padded envelope. I do not call $11.05 for a single suet cake a terrfic buy -- in fact, I'd call it a rip-off. I called Grady's several times and was continually referred to someone who wasn't in the store that day. After several attempts, they agreed to credit the full price, and said not to bother returning the item. Okay ! They also agreed that the ad was misleading and they'd fix it. Okay ! Except the credit was never processed, and the ad remains the same. I had to follow-up several times 4 weeks later, asking if the credit had been processed. This, my feathered friends, is a lot of work for a suet cake. Finally, I took it up with Amazon, and they issued the credit. I would not recommend dealing with this vendor. I would highly recommend Nottawa Bird Supply (they have a website), that sells a high-quality product in a variety pack with free shipping. Forget Grady's -- they certainly do not warrant top placement on anyone's page.

I love this bluebird house. My husband positioned it on a high plastic pole in our backyard in a place where I can watch the birds. He also hung two feeders and a water container on another pole near the house but about 10 feet away so this houses occupants wouldn't be disturbed. I had doubts it would be used the first year. I would watch 2 sets of bluebirds checking the house out, they would sit on top of it and also cling to the entrance and poke their heads in and out. Then fly off. Then they would come back and do it again.This went on for a while. Then a blue bird male and female moved in.. I was thrilled. We had three babies the first year they moved in. I would advise to definitely make sure your pole is at the least 6 foot tall and a baffle placed under it. Make sure all branches or brush are trimmed away from this house as the birds won't use it if they feel threatened. Our biggest problem at our house is the neighbors cat. So we make sure our dogs are in the yard to scare the cat off as the neighbor refuses to keep the cat in.

Illuminarie Solar Globe Review

I bought this globe based on the image that accompanied the Amazon ad. In it was shown a deep glowing ball at dusk casting a blue hue to nearby objects and so I naturally assumed that's what I was getting. Instead I got a globe that looks like a plastic beachball during the day and glows for about 10 minutes at night. And when I say glows I'm really stretching - you'd have to be pretty good at seeing in the blackness of night to even know it was glowing.

Not a fan of having to squint at things that are supposed to "glow in the dark". As a daylight garden object d'art it's barely passable - very disappointed with this item.

*** Additional - the above review must have been written by someone with a vested interest in this product since that's the only item they reviewed - glowingly I might add (arf). Suggesting a glow in the dark item should have a bulb placed in or near it is the single most ridiculous thing I've heard this week. But it sort of proves that this product does NOT glow in the dark and should not be advertised as such. ***

This feeder has a number of design issues that make it difficult to use.And, over time, the birds have stopped using this feeder.

In the beginning, the birds really liked this feeder,and they were all over it. Perching birds, clinging birds all seem satisfied. But something has happened over time, and it appears that the seed-delivery is no longer working well.I don't know whether it's because the seed is exposed to the rain and the quality deteriorates, or if the weight of the seed has caused the links to close up making the seed difficult to extract, but the birds have stopped using this feeder.

In addition, filling the feeder is a real challenge.

1. It does not stand on its own. If you put it on the floor to fill, it collapses, since the chain links are loose and there's no structure to hold the feeder in full open position. This is especially problematic if there's some seed remaining in the feeder. To fill it, you have to hold the handle in one hand while holding the cover open with the same hand (a bit tricky) and then fill with the other. You can't put the feeder down on the floor or it collapses sprinkling seed all over the place. To combat this, I rigged up an S-hook and hung the feeder from it.That way, I could hold the cover open with one hand, and fill with the other.

2. When you're filling it, the seeds pour out of the chain links. Much seed is wasted on the floor. You have to fill it with the feeder sitting in the seed bag so the seeds fall back into the bag.

In all, I would not recommend this chain-link style feeder.

I bought this for a puppy crate. This dish is fine quality stainless and snaps into a plated steel hoop, which in turn attaches to the bars of the crate. It is chew proof and removes easily for cleaning. A determined dog could remove the dish. The dish is round, and so takes up quite a bit of real estate in the crate.

If you look closely at the picture you can see it's one flaw: the mounting bracket fits at an upward angle. To level the dish you have to leave the screw loose. I wanted something the puppy would not knock off the bars and spill, so this is a bit of an annoyance.

This plain, pure suet is a good product if you have nuisance birds like house sparrows or starlings hogging your suet, which often happens when the suet contains peanuts, corn or millet.

Having said that, $8+ dollars a cake plus $7+ for shipping is pretty outrageous. I can buy this item at the local birding supply store for a little over $5 a cake, including state and city sales tax. I was hoping to find it cheaper than that on Amazon, but it doesn't seem likely.

Millet Spray Holder Review

When I first saw this contraption, I was skeptical; but since I got it for $1.99, I figured if it didn't work I wouldn't be out much. This was a nice surprise. I was expecting it to be blue, but the one I got is a pale yellow. At first, my budgies, Jake and Stella didn't pay much attention to it. Honestly, I think Jake may have been a little afraid of it. When there was no activity with the holder after a few hours, I tried a new tactic. This thing works much better if you cram two millet sprays into it instead of one. It pushes the sprays up against the sides of the basket and makes access to the seeds much easier. Once they get the hang of eating out of it, the holder works great. It also solves the problem of Stella ripping the sprays apart for sheer entertainment. She would tear at the stem until it was completely bare, eating little or none of the seed. Poor Jakey didn't used to even get a chance to eat any of the millet, unless he picked it out of the bottom of the cage. This thing slows Stella down considerably and she doesn't guard it from Jake the way she would a bare spray. A great solution if you have a millet monster like I do!

Seed Saucer Green Review

The saucer with the removable grid in place does an excellent job keeping seeds and husks from spilling onto the ground. The product would rate five stars if it weren't for one dangerous design flaw: the holes in the removable grid are just large enough for a sparrow-sized bird to work its head through to reach seed that has collected in the bowl below, but not large enough for the bird to pull its head back through. The grid is made of a very stiff, hard plastic which, perhaps were less rigid, would allow birds to work their heads free on their own should they become stuck. After freeing several sparrows and goldfinches whose heads had become stuck in a grid hole, I finally removed the grid and am using the saucer without it. There is some seed spillage without the grid, but nowhere near the amount that was spilling before I purchased the saucer. I can recommend this product only if it is used without the grid, and without the grid in place you will experience more seed spillage than the product was designed to prevent.

This bird feeder is certainly beautiful and, at first, seems very well designed. However, squirrels have bitten away the cedar around the openings to get at the seed. The holes at the bottom are now too big to contain any seed and the feeder is now essentially a funnel. While I think I can repair this damage, the design should be reworked to include metal plates around the openings and perches. Or, the overall esthetics of the design could be preserved by lining the sides with the same kind of etched glass which comprises the body of the feeder. I would rate this feeder higher if it had come with some documentation warning me about the potential for squirrel damage. I don't know what I would have done though -- if I wanted to look at something as ugly as one of those "satellite dishes" I would have bought a plastic bird feeder. In sort, this is a beautiful bird feeder but you'll need to guard it against bushy-tailed vandals.

It's a good feeder in that the feeding tube is mesh, which allows the bird seed to stay fresh and dry - as opposed to a solid tube with feeding stations that allows moisture to enter, but not dry once inside, causing mold and contamination of bird seed. It is also very easy to fill. And you can't beat the price.
The semi bad thing is that the cage surround has openings large enough to allow squirrels to feed from it. It basically became 'the squirrel feeder'. If hung in a place inaccessible to squirrels, it's a perfect bird feeder.

Shimmer Glass Birdfeeder, AQUA Review

I sensed there might be a problem with this product as soon as I saw it. I was afraid that squirrels might be able to gnaw through its thin, flexible hanger too easily. But I dismissed my fears, thinking that perhaps there was a metal core to the hanger.

However my fears were realized less than an hour after I hung this birdfeeder on a tree branch. I looked out and saw the feeder on the ground. Sure enough, a squirrel had gnawed through the cord and was happily munching on the seed scattered on the ground. Luckily, the glass feeder wasn't broken, so I bent the original hanger out of the way and jury-rigged a stout coat hanger to serve the purpose.

Then the glass of the feeder doesn't really sparkle much. Mostly, the feeder looks like an opaque box, and you can't tell at a glance when its supply of birdseed has been depleted. You have to lift the roof off the container to see where things stand.

On the plus side, the sparrows and cardinals in my area seem to like the feeder well enough. It's ledge is large enough to give them a perch while feeding, but not large enough to allow pigeons and other voracious birds to get a foothold and finish off all the seed. Then if you rig the coat hanger properly, you can also prevent squirrels from devouring the seed.

Another positive - the feeder's roof has enough of an overhang to keep the seed in the tray dry during rainstorms.

In short, this is OK, but it seems as if there are better options out there.

My husband bought me 2 of these feeders for my birthday. They worked ok. the Hummingbirds used them, but not as much as my others. Mine faded the first season and the words on the outside washed of first thing, which could be a good thing.I was looking through a hummingbird web site and found that these feeders are death traps for the little guys and they had a picture of one of its victims. They said if you modify them, they are useable. To modify, First, from the bottom side of the feeder lid, re-drill each port hole outward at a 45 degree angle. Next, cut or grind the nipple from the underside. If you don't have a grinder, simply used a razor blade to cut down through the nipple at a 45 degree angle. To me it's not worth the risk to my little friends and I shouldn't have to mess around with modifying something before I use it.

Wingscapes WSCA04 Timelapse PlantCam Review

The PlantCam is a robust, well-designed device that produces timelapse videos at a very affordable price. It also has some idiosyncrasies that are worth knowing about. For me, it replaces an awkward method of timelapse photography in which I attached a video camera via Firewire to a Mac laptop and used iMovie's option of capturing frames at a reduced rate. That method was very flexible (the framerate was infinitely adjustable and the camera could zoom in as needed), but it tied up a computer and video camera for the duration of the movie, and it could not easily be used outdoors. By contrast, the battery-operated PlantCam is self-contained, compact, sturdy, sealed against the weather for use outdoors, and designed to do this one task well. Its preset choice of framerates and non-zoom lens are less flexible than the iMovie approach, but the PlantCam does the job at about a twentieth of the cost of the other equipment.

The designers made choices that generally are very shrewd and user friendly. In Setup mode, one selects an interval from "ASAP" (almost real time) through 0.5, 1 or 5 min (the settings I have used for full-day movies) to one frame per day. Images are stored on an SD card that is easily tranferred to a computer, and there is also a cable for playing images directly to a TV. Images can be labeled with the interval, date, and clock time, or labeling can be turned off. Image size is selectable in three steps from 640x480 to 2560x1920, and the image quality is good (rich colors and deep blacks). Focus is selected from one of three choices spanning 11" to infinity. Both a laser pointer and a viewfinder are available to establish where the camera is pointed. For multi-day recordings, the time the camera turns on and off can be preset in hourly increments. All in all, the designers have provided well-thought-out functionality.

But the PlantCam also has a few idiosyncrasies that were not what I expected, although I was able to find workarounds for all of them. In particular, it helps to understand that at heart the PlantCam is a device for capturing still frames. The "video" setting does not produce a single timelapse video as I expected, but instead captures a series of 10-second video clips at the specified interval. (I am mystified by the utility of this series of video clips.) To produce a "normal" timelapse video, one instead captures still photos and uses Setup mode's "convert to video" function to compile the still frames into an AVI video. The conversion is limited to 360 frames, which is not enough for long videos at higher framerates. The workaround is to convert the still images in blocks of 360, specifying the first frame and last frame for each conversion, and then paste the blocks together in QuickTime before saving the compiled video as a QuickTime (.MOV) file. Another idiosyncrasy: saving the AVI file is wise even if it is complete because of a software bug that gives each compiled AVI file the same date and time. The individual jpegs are correctly time and date stamped from the camera's internal clock, but the AVI file is always stamped Nov 25, 1961. (I have corresponded with Wingscapes about this bug and perhaps it will be fixed in a future firmware update.) Finally, another limitation of the software is that AVI videos are always 640x480 even if the stills have higher resolution. Thus, there is no point in capturing stills at higher resolution if conversion to an AVI movie is the goal. However, QuickTime does provide a workaround: by importing a series of high-resolution stills, QuickTime can produce a high-resolution movie.

In spite of these few puzzling design decisions, the PlantCam is an excellent choice. It definitely does the job it was intended to do easily, with high-quality results, and at a very favorable cost. It's fun to use, and I'd recommend it highly.

The first GardenWatchCam I received lacked the essential bottom housing plate that contains the tripod mount socket. After an exchange, I found that the camera would only accept flash drives formatted FAT 16, limiting the size of the flash drive. My second unit also has an erratic timer. At the one minute setting, the camera snaps its photos at about 40 second intervals. At the custom 20 second interval, it snaps at 14 second intervals. While tolerable, it also makes the 24 hour setting pretty useless for me.

Brinno's included documentation for the unit is minimal at best.

Two emails to Brinno's customer service have gone unanswered and unacknowledged. It appears that buyers experiencing negative issues with the unit are on their own.

The camera does take acceptable time-lapse movies, but with the issues above, I'd like to warn folks off of it until Brinno becomes more responsible in their quality control and customer service.

I have had bluebirds nesting in my back yard for about five years (after trapping the English sparrows that always drove them away). I had a pine bluebird box but it required various modifications: a copper hole guard to keep enemy birds from enlarging the entrance, a bird ladder to help fledglings get out (or, if used by bone-tired migrating tree swallows, the parent birds), and frequent treatment and repair as it weathered. My old birdhouse, despite improvements, eventually needed replacement, and I stepped up to this model Songbird Cedar Ultimate Bluebird House. I have been delighted with it. It is made of weather-resistant cedar, which will not darken to the point that it becomes a heat trap. The ventilating slots under the roof are large but sheltered from rain, and the overhanging roof keeps rain out of the entrance. Construction is solid, with screws where needed and a piano hinge on either side. The viewing panel is an added bonus: no visitor to our house passed up a chance at a quick look at the baby birds, which started out as balls of brownish fuzz and eventually developed into lanky adolescents with blue feathers. A bonus: tree swallows like it too. That's why I'm buying a second one. The only imperfection is the lack of a complete bird ladder, though the rough sawn interior should be adequate for bluebirds. For swallows, which are extremely poor climbers, I built in a bird ladder of hardware cloth -- hardly a major project, and even simpler solutions could be improvised.

I've been feeding hummers for nearly 10 years.I feed about 40 Rufous and Annas at any one time and use about a half gallon of nectar a day (if I had more feeders, I'm sure I'd use more nectar as the feeders are nearly 100% used all day long).

Up till now, my favorite feeder remains the Perky Pet 32 oz feeder, even though it is needlessly difficult to clean (no way to disassemble the base and clean the nooks and crannies - even a flexible bottle brush isn't sufficient - have to resort to using uncooked rice to try and clean them properly).

Anyhoo, this feeder looked like somebody was (finally) using their noodle and I bought a few.When I got them, I found some flaws.First off, the capacity is too small for my preference and needs - only 16 oz.I bought 4 of them to compensate, but am returning them.The convenience in cleaning doesn't offset the design flaws imo.

Problems that I see: 1) The angle of the feeding holes are too flat for even the smallest hummers to drink from without kinking their necks (a problem way too many feeders have in common- I wonder if the people designing the feeders even bother to watch hummers in action).

2) The perch for the hummers is too close to the body for even the smaller hummers to feed without being crammed tight.

3)Only 4 feeding stations - I prefer 6 per feeder to drain the feeders faster and prevent the nectar from spoiling.

Dr JB gets an attaboy for designing an easy to clean feeder, but it should have been so much better.However, considering the atrociously bad selection of feeders (despite the myriad numbers being sold), this feeder is a decent choice.

I will keep looking for the perfect feeder, but I despair that I will ever find one...

Anyone that is an avid bird feeding enthusiast knows well that suet is a worthwhile investment in your trade.Both in the extra pleasure it will bring you, and in the nutritional needs it offers your birds.Processed suet is nothing more than rendered fat mixed in with a variety of things birds have a hankerin' for, like seed, berries, peanuts, and even insects.Birds not only love it for its rich flavor, but it is also very good for them, and in winter an essential.Suet helps birds build a layer of fat on their bodies that helps them keep warm during winters siege.And, suets high protein content also helps keep their feathers thick and strong for shielding the cold wind. Unlike seed, which some birds have a preference for certain kinds, all birds seem to enjoy suet. It is a universal value for both you, and your feathered flock.

Despite suets many advantages, anyone that is familiar with it also knows that it is much less a joy to handle than it is to witness its effect.It becomes greasy on skin contact, making it hard to handle. (Not to mention, just plain yucky).And if you own several suet cages, more than likely at least one cake will slip out of your grip and fall on the ground during your rounds.Thus picking up any dirt and riff raff that it happens to come into contact with. Lastly, regular suet easily melts in warm temperatures, making it that much more susceptible to your dropping it and creating a mess.Suet dough is a very sensible, and in my opinion, better all 'round alternative to regular suet.

Suet dough is rendered with the same fat that the regular is, but it also has an additional amount of corn meal, or bran that gives it a feel and appearance similar to hard packed carrot cake, for example.It is not greasy, and it never melts no matter how hot it gets.Suet dough can be found plain, or with peanuts added, such as this brand.Even if you are used to seeing birds go after regular suet on a cold winter day, you will marvel at how they love this stuff.All birds love suet dough, even ones that you never seem to see around regular suet. The other reviewer here that mentioned woodpeckers in particular is correct.I occasionally see a woodpecker or two around regular suet or seed, but nothing like when suet dough is being offered.They then become regular and familiar customers.Nothing is ever wasted with suet dough, and it leaves no greasy residue around the cage.It is in my opinion a easier, smarter investment.

Suet dough may be a little more expensive, but the resulting consumption, ease of use, and lack of waste, together with the birds going crazy over it, is well worth the extra money. The only down side to suet dough is the fact that it is loved by all living things it seems.Squirrels will dig it out any way they can, and raccoons are particularly drawn to it.If you live in a place that is inundated with squirrels, and all manner of night time marauders, I suggest you forget the hanging cage that you see in yards everywhere.Using the cage is all right, but secure it to a tree or post, and clasp the cage closed somehow with a strong alligator clip or similar implement.Any cage a raccoon can get at, he will manage to get open or tear down unless you make it real difficult for him.

I recommend suet dough for anyone that feeds birds year 'round, especially if you live in the south, or any other warm climate.It's a joy to handle compared to regular suet, and you will love the results.Buy a dozen or more cakes at once to make the shipping worth it.Trust me, once your birds discover it, you will need it...

This tube feeder is pretty good.I've got this one and also the one without the wooden tray and top that's made by the same company.I actually prefer the model without the wood components.Mine actuallydoesn't have the wooden tray attached to it anymore.After some time hadpassed, I just simply tore it off. That's not a problem though becausewithout the wooden tray, the feeder's bottom is identical to the other tubefeeder model without the wooden parts (The wooden tray wasn't thatstrong.).The birds use this tube feeder quite a bit, but not always asmuch as the one without the wooden parts--both of them contain the sametype of seed.Location could be the reason for that maybe.I also use abaffle above it to deter squirrels and to keep it from getting wet.Irecommend getting the model without the wooden top and tray though.Iactually rate this feeder 3.5 stars.It's still a good feeder that getsthe job done with the birds.

Woodlink 16" Clear Plastic Squirrel Baffle Review

I use it on a 1" pole and at a height level that is right underneath my hanging bird feeder, while at the same time about 5' from the ground. It works wonder, the baffle (skirt) wobbles as rodents try to dislodge it from beneath (& inside) and there's no way they can defeat this - unless of course they chew off the ring support, which is exactly what mine are doing day & night now. They teeth are too strong for the acrylic but Woodlink assures me that if they chew it through, a replacement piece will be mailed to me. Since that I wouldn't accept anything in black or green, this modern acrylic clear baffle is perfect. And once again, it works very well.

Nothing on this product works as promised.
1. It is very difficult to attach the hanger to a bottle.
2. The holes in the birdbath are too big, so that the hanger tends to slip out.
3. The bottle does not empty nicely, but within a minute or so. While it empties, it constricts very loudly.
Now I have a birdbath that I can put on the floor or table. Not recommended.

Usually when you put out a new feeder it takes the birds a few weeks to get used to it.However, the birds that came to my feeder loved this feeder from the start.As a matter of fact, they prefer this feeder to all the other ones I have.I am always having to refill it!I like this feeder because it is made from recycled materials, and I am a firm believer in recycling.I also like the fact that it holds lots of seeds, which means less trips outside!My only "issue" is that the wire that is used to hang the feeder is bent, making it hard to slide the metal clamp up and down.This makes it difficult to open the roof to fill the feeder.Perhaps I could try to straighten it, but I'm afraid I would make it worse.Despite this, I would highly recommend this feeder.

Product is fine, pricing is misleading.

I purchased this in June 2009 when it said it was 87% off list price and is now $2.54 per case.I am happy to see that the description says a "case" is one cake.It said it was 12 cakes when I purchased it. At the time they graciously refunded my shipping but I still paid for quite pricey suet when Home Depot sells it for about $1.29 per cake.

In any case, this produce would NEVER sell for $19.00 per "cake" hence an 87% discount is completely misleading and I hope no other buys make the mistake I did.

Metal Suet Bird Feed Cage Review

In winter, so many wild creatures came to the suet feeders, that we decided to add two more to our existing two.The two we had were the simple wooden once. They are cheap and inconspicuous, but squirrels have quickly damaged the bottom part. Therefore, we decided to get the metal once, and somewhat more fancy. "Artline Deluxe Metal Suet Cage Feeder" looked nice on the screen, was reasonably priced, and we bought two of them. We have been using them continuously for about 6 weeks. Pros: sturdy cage, strong hanging wire; very easy to wash; and the sun catcher is easily detachable . Cons: (1) too small! I had to cut the plastic sides of the suet cakes to fit them in; (2) a flimsy plastic lock, holding the roof, is no match for the squirrels. We had to hang feeders from thin branches to prevent squirrels from devouring the entire cake in a few hours. Of course, this kind of positioning has prevented bigger birds like woodpeckers above 8", starlings, or gray jays to eat it too.

With shipping, two of these bird fountains cost me just over $10. (They come in pairs.) I was very disappointed with the product. One has to stretch a very flimsy plastic net over a soda bottle. The first one I tried split wide open as soon as I attempted to insert the bottle. The second one worked but the plastic hanging gizmo that hooks into the net is difficult to use and very flimsy like the net. I don't expect it to last for more than one season. In summary, it's a piece of junk.

I bought two of these to add to the bird feeding station in my yard.They are well constructed and very attractive and I like that they are made in the USA from recycled materials.Unfortunately, they don't seem to be practical or useful for their intended purpose.Bigger birds (like woodpeckers) definitely can't get a perch on them and even the little chickadees & nuthatches seem to be struggling to feed from them.I will probably go back to feeding suet from the cheap little green cages you can purchase in any department store and these Vari-Craft feeders will be a just an expensive decoration.

Edited 5/31/10:After having the feeders in the yard for a couple of months, I have to revise my initial opinion.The birds have adapted and can use them with no problem - even the bigger birds.Unfortunately, very noisy and obnoxious grackles & starlings have now taken over the feeders and have chased away the charming Chickadees and Nuthatches that I enjoy watching. I continue to fill the feeders only because a lone woodpecker visits from time to time and I'm hoping he or she will bring some friends!

I bought this when the woodpeckers decided this year to dominate my other hummingbird feeders. The hummers took to it right away, and didn't have any trouble figuring out how to use it. The picture is a little misleading- the only part that is red is the bottom part. The top, where you fill the nectar is actually clear. It is easy to clean. The only concern I have is the seemingly cheap make of the red bottom part. I hope it doesn't crack after a few uses.

Habita Birdhouse Branches Terra Cotta Review

This is a great ceramic birdhouse.The picture is a great representation of its color.It is easy to slide the top up to clean and its ceramic intereior and exterior will hold up for years with reasonable care.Since it is ceramic it can break if dropped or mistreated but I love it so much I am going to get several more for my second home.Also the price for the terra cotta colored unit is 1/4 that of the same birdhouses in white, blue or green.What a great deal!
